From the team that ProFundCom is supporting:
In June, we (Charlie Bowker, Peter Shannon and Ruairi Keeley) will be cycling 1530 miles from Athens to London in aid of the John Radcliffe Hospital Neuro ITU Ward. Our route will begin at the Athens Olympic stadium, going up the East coast of Italy, followed by the Alps and mainland France with a final push to The London Olympic Stadium.
We have decided to embark on this trip in aid of a charity very close to all of our hearts. In April 2009, Joe Robinson, a fellow school pupil, was a passenger in a horrific car crash. He suffered 3 broken vertebrae in his back, 2 broken vertebrae in his neck and a fractured skull.
Since coming out of hospital, Joe has completed many incredible feats, including a bike ride that raised £30,000 for the John Radcliffe Hospital. This is why we have decided to do our bike ride in aid of the John Radcliffe Hospital Neuro ITU Ward that saved Joe’s life in association with JR4JR. The neuroscience surgeon, on the day Joe was discharged from hospital, estimated the total costs of his treatment was around £1,000,000. We hope that one-day our fund raising efforts might help save another unfortunate person that has to pass through the doors of the Neuro ITU Ward.
The money that we will raise will go towards patient services, the hospital environment, research and teaching in the Neuro ITU Ward, which takes the NHS beyond what they can afford without additional funding.
The cycle ride will also be dedicated in memory of one of Ruairi’s closest family friends, Tighe Sullivan. Tighe was a man who enjoyed the more adventurous activities and thus the trip seemed apt to be dedicated to his memory.
We would like to thank our main sponsors ProFundCom and Wiggle for there amazing contribution towards this event, as it would not have been possible to organise without there help and support.
