Gmail Is About to Summarise Your Investor Letters Before LPs Read Them. Here’s What That Breaks.

We already know that AI might adjudicate emails before hitting inboxes. Now, it will start ripping information from buried content just as quickly.

We already know that AI adjudicates some emails before hitting inboxes. Now, it will start ripping information from buried content just as quickly.

TL; DR: writes disclosures in plain text for AI scanners.

AI feature rollouts are becoming daily news. Unsurprisingly, earlier this month Google started to introduce its (now commonplace) AI Overviews inside Gmail for search capabilities. The full deployment to Schedule Release Workspace domains has also been completed.

This will allow users to type any natural-language question into the Gmail search bar to get a Gemini-generated answer. Its response to, say, “what did x fund’s Q2 letter say about exposure to rates?” will be compiled then and there from past information hidden in an investor’s inbox, rather than giving a ranked list to be manually sorted through.

It currently covers paid Workspace tiers (Business and Enterprise Starter/Standard/Plus), Google AI Plus/Pro/Ultra subscribers and Frontline Plus add-ons in English only. Personal Gmail accounts in the EEA, UK, Switzerland and Japan are excluded for now. But this covers a meaningful chunk of institutional investors’ and family offices’ inboxes that will receive capital call notices and IR updates.

So, what does this mean for fund marketers?

Like many other AI agent changes at Big Tech firms, these changes happen on the down low, all despite being hugely influential on how fund marketers cater their investor-facing content to suit their fickle authentications.

An email’s body text becomes as instrumental as the clarity of the subject line now that AI will be extracting it on a growing basis. A persuasive, cleverly worded subject line crafted to drive a human to open an email is worth nothing if the email is never opened at all. Instead, they can now ask Gemini for a synthesised version of information across a whole inbox.

Therefore, hard facts – NAV, performance figures, prevalent changes, key dates – should be prioritised in a few initial lines of plain text. If they get lost in a PDF attachment or dense legal boilerplate, the model may not parse it for an AI summary as cleanly as a marketer has intended.

This is noteworthy given that many funds put disclosures and disclaimers in small-print captions, footers, or within embedded images at the bottoms of emails. AI can omit any relevant compliance copy here, meaning recipients will not get the correct up-to-date information.

It is best to conduct an audit of current templates: to make material disclosures scannable for plain text, and structuring emails to deliver the statistical figures upfront. These are small, cheap mechanical fixes that can make the transition to AI email summaries seamless, and ensure that your emails do become reduced to inbox-noise, or get misrepresented by these AI gatekeepers.
